Maintaining Your Evap-o-watt
For Fun Science, Just Add Water
Humidity and Your Evap-o-watt
To get the best performance out of your Evap-o-watt, the environment it is displayed in should be below 70% Relative Humidity and above 65 degrees F. Relative Humidity levels any higher than 70% will temporarily cause the lights to stop blinking until the RH drops back down below 70%. The higher the humidity at its location the slower the lights will blink. Therefore, an indoor, air conditioned room is highly recommended. Swamp coolers are not compatible. Dusty or cold environments are not compatible. So keep it indoors where it's clean, warm, and dry. You can take it out on the porch or patio given conditions are compatible. Bright sunlight will obscure the light from the LEDs, so position it away from bright sunlit areas. Why distilled water? Tap water has sediments, contaminants, chlorine and bacteria that can fowl the evaporator wicks and reduce performance of the evaporator causing power loss. The wicks must then be removed and cleaned to restore full operation.
Keep your Evap-o-watt away from humid areas of your house, like bathrooms or kitchens, where a lot of water can get into the air from dishwashers or showers. It won't hurt it but in may not function until the air drys out. Keep distance between multiple Evap-o-watts. Each one raises the humidity around itself slightly and you should keep about a foot or so distance between them.
It's easy to take care of your Evap-o-watt! With these simple care and maintenance tips, you can be confident that your unique LED sculpture will remain an operational and fun part of your art and science collection indefinitely.
